The Klipgat Cave just outside De Kelders in the Walker Bay Nature Reserve was home to ancient peoples (homo sapiens sapiens) whilst Europe was still inhabited by the much more primitive (and later extinct) Neanderthals.

The spectacular limestone rock formations, artfully sculptured by nature, over aeons, into window-like openings, led to the name Klipgat (stone with a hole). It offers breathtaking views over the Walker Bay coastline and Die Plaat.

It took roughly forty years after a major shipwreck on the coast at Gansbaai with a great loss of lives, for a lighthouse to finally emerge in 1895. A memorial plaque is on one of the walls of the lighthouse, in similar fashion to another plaque of the same wreck erected as a reminder in Arniston, just up the coast from here, to remind one of the Birkenhead, caught on a reef roughly a kilometre from Danger Point in 1852 in the wee hours of the morning.

Marietjie’s Pub & Grill in Baardskeerdersbos is a hidden gem. The rustic atmosphere and friendly service make it a great spot for a casual meal or a hearty breakfast. The portions are huge, and the food is delicious. The ribs are particularly memorable, and the breakfast is very generous. For those looking for a unique experience, they offer “moer coffee” from a flask and a shared platter of bacon, eggs, toast, boerewors, and chips all served on one plate. The deserts are also worth trying, especially the malva pudding and chocolate brownie. The staff are attentive and friendly, and the venue is quaintly rustic. Marietjie’s Pub & Grill is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.
